| What is Zoo-phonics? It is a Kinesthetic method of teaching phonics, reading and spelling to children 2-6 years of age. Every letter in the alphabet has an animal drawn in the shape of the letter. Every animal letter has a gesture that relates directly to what the animal does. For example, the “a” alligator opens and closes his mouth (use arms and hands), the bear reaches up to the honey hive (extend your arms over your head as if to pull some honey down to your mouth) etc. Zoo-phonics uses animal letters and body wiggles to allow your child to rely on more than just the “eyes and ears,” unlike all other reading and spelling programs. Your child will learn to articulate sounds properly because he/she can see the animal and, through the animals’ names hear the appropriate letter sounds (i.e., Allie Alligator says “aaaaaa”, Bubba Bears says “bbbbb,” etc) With a quick cue, the body signal and an appropriate sound and your child will properly replicate the sound. Zoo-phonics is so playful because it uses Animal letters instead of plain letters, and it uses “body wiggles.” Zoo-phonics engages the whole child: eyes, ears, mouth, and body. Zoo-phonics will make sense to your child!
If we pause for just a minute to think about what the reading process is really all about, it might makes us more sensitive to our children. Think about this: Can you hear the sound this musical note represents? Can you hear the sound these musical notes make? That is what we are asking children to do when we show them symbols that stand for letters. We’re asking them to look at visual symbols and “hear” sounds of the letters that make words. Aa, Bb, Cc etc. Then fill a page with them – Whew! No wonder some children struggle. So, let’s make it easy for them. Let’s make it memorable for them. Best yet, let’s make it fun for them!
